We've had a lot of fantastic entries for our story competition.  Thanks to all the schools and children who took part. Your entries were all of a high standard and it was very difficult for the judges to choose a winner. After a lot of deliberation, we decided that the top prize should go to:

THE CASE OF THE MISSING CONES, written by 2l at Farsley Springback Primary School.

This story had pace, excitement, a creative use of clues and a brilliant twist in the tail.

A very close runner up was WHITBY'S MISSING PIECE, which made the seaside resort of Whitby really come to life. It was written by Eliza and Chloe at Swarcliffe Primary.

The prize is a free author visit for the winning school. I'll be in touch with the Farsley Springback Primary later on today.

I hope you're enjoying our wonderful story set in Scarborough, the very first seaside resort in the UK. Now that we've reached Chapter 4, I hope it's inspired you to write your own stories.

Yorkshire schools are full of budding and talented writers, so we're having an exciting competition to celebrate your talents.  Write us a mystery set in a seaside resort and you could win a free author visit for your school.

You could set the story in a real resort, like Scarborough or Filey or Bridlington. You can also make up your own as long as it's somewhere by the sea. We're looking for an exciting, pacy story that will keep us guessing till the end, and for interesting characters we can grow to like and admire.

So fancy your chances? Have a look at the competition rules below.

  1. The competition is open to all schools in the Leeds SLS catchment area.
  2. The story must be written by a child or class in KS1.
  3. The subject of the story is the seaside and it has to be a mystery.
  4. The length of the story is between 500 and 1000 words.
  5. The judges will be Saviour Pirotta and Kirsty Fenn and Pauline Macmahon from the Leeds SLS.
  6. The judges' decision is final.
  7. The story must be emailed in word format to sg.pirotta@googlemail.com no later than 7th November 2017.
  8. The winners will be announced on the 14th November.
  9. The prize is a free school visit from Saviour Pirotta and must be taken any day of the week starting the 27th November.
  10. The winning story will be posted on this website for all to enjoy.

Welcome to a special part of my site dedicated to Tick Tock Cafe. This is an exciting online mystery story aimed at KS1 schoolchildren and commissioned by Leeds School Libraries Services.

A chapter will go live every Tuesday at 9.00am in September and October for five weeks. Check the poster to the right for the exact dates. The story is set in the seaside town of Scarborough and of special interest to Yorkshire schools. Anyone anywhere can enjoy it, though.

At the end, there will be a competition to write a class story featuring a seaside attraction. The prize is a free one day school visit from yours truly for a mini extravaganza of storytelling, reading and writing workshops.

The competition will only be open to schools in the Leeds SLS catchment area. I will be posting instructions for the competition in early October but keep your notebooks handy as you read. It's never too early to start jotting down your own ideas.
